An Approach to Pneumatic Retinopexy

2007
ABSTRACT Pneumatic retinopexy is a minimally invasive surgery for the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments that involves injection of an intravitreal gas bubble to tamponade the causative retinal tear(s) and cryotherapy or laser photocoagulation to create a permanent chorioretinal adhesion. Since its original description and establishment as one of the main surgical methods for repair of a retinal detachment, many different variations of the surgical technique have been described. Many excellent review articles and chapters have been written on pneumatic retinopexy. The purpose of this article is to outline a simplified technique for office-based pneumatic retinopexy, discuss clinical examination techniques, and provide an approach to extended indications.
