Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of VoLTE

2018
This chapter summarizes Voice over LTE (VoLTE) principles, and outlines the main VoLTE features along with deployment best practices. It evaluates the VoLTE voice quality in terms of the perceptual objective listening quality analysis (POLQA) mean opinion score (MOS) score and compares it with an over‐the‐top (OTT) application, 3G with adaptive multi‐rate with both wideband (AMR‐WB) and 2G with adaptive multi‐rate with narrowband (AMR‐NB). The chapter also outlines deployment best practices, explains the testing environment, and provides practical performance analysis. It then covers enhanced voice services (EVS) coding and voice evolution. In addition, the chapter also evaluates key VoLTE features such as robust overhead compression (RoHC), transmission time interval (TTI) bundling, and semi‐persistent scheduling (SPS). The chapter then provides VoLTE performance assessment based on the network KPIs. It discusses block error rate (BLER) impact on voice quality, and then analyzes scheduler performance.
