Towards a framework for the recognition of good supervisory practice

2020
Historically, it was assumed that the only requirement to be a research supervisor was to be research-active. If this was ever true, it is not today in view of recent seismic changes which have transformed the roles of supervisors. The latter have had to significantly extend their professionality, although this has often remained unrecognised by stakeholders. This chapter reports on the development in the UK of a national framework to provide recognition. It outlines the case for it, how it was developed, the framework itself, and the ways that it is being used to enhance and recognise good practice.
