EVALUATION OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS CONSTRUCTED USING NOVOPHALT

Not only old Egyptian roads but also those which recently constructed are suffering from rutting mainly due to high traffic loads. Recently; Egyptian Roads and Bridges Authority (ERBA) tries to control this problem. A proposed solution was using Novophalt as binder material in asphalt layers instead of the normal asphalt. Novophalt is asphalt improved by adding 4-6% polyethylene. This paper aims at evaluating the performance of pavement having Novophalt as binder material. Economical evaluation of this manner considered as another objective. To achieve these objectives, the performances of two road links paved using Novophalt as well as normal asphalt was conducted. The investigated links were of identical characteristics related to geometry, structural sections, climatic conditions and traffic loads. Analysis of the results showed that using Novophalt in producing asphalt concrete mixes led to preventing rutting largely, despite the fact that some development of cracking distresses noticed. Performance curves of pavement having Novophalt were also established. Although the initial cost of using Novophalt is higher than that of normal asphalt, but when dealing with the whole service life of the pavement, Novophalt is economic.
