Round Robin Test: Measurement of High Power LEDs

2013
High-power LEDs are becoming increasingly important. In vehicle lighting for example headlamps or interior lighting, white LEDs are no longer negligible. The more important it becomes that the measurement of LEDs provide reliable and accurate results. Due to the variation in production of the LEDs, LED binning is indispensable. LED binning groups become smaller and smaller so accurate measurement results become more important. To get an overview of the currently in the German lighting industry existing measurement technique for the determination of luminous flux and spectral radiant flux, the Laboratory of Lighting Technology at the Technische Universitat Darmstadt, performs a round robin test and act as a pilot laboratory. In this round robin test LED manufacturers, lighting manufacturers and manufacturers of measurement equipment take part. The primary objective of this study is to detect deviations in the measured results to each other or maybe measurement errors and to explain these differences or errors. By discussing the differences with the various partners, opportunities for improvement and with the accumulated knowledge of the real existing measurement uncertainty in the industry, possibilities to reduce the measurements errors should be found. Because the round robin is still in progress at the deadline for the submission of the papers, this paper shows only the procedure and some preliminary results of the round robin.
