Transforming Advanced Practice Nursing into Clinical Scholarship

Transforming scholarly practice into clinical scholarship is ground-breaking work and should not be diluted in any way. Advanced practice nursing practitioners need to be visionary and in that way start to populate their career legacy cartography portfolio and their contribution to the policy context research agenda (see Chap. 6). Clarity around the terms of scholarship should be a given in striving to unpack each of the elements and in particular the qualities of a scholar and their relationship to scholarly knowing. Advanced practice nursing practitioners need to appreciate that clinical scholarship does not reach its ultimate value until it is shared with the public and peers aligned with the six steps presented by Glassick et al. (Scholarship assessed: evaluation of the professoriate, 1997) that could resonate throughout all their scholarly activities. Faculty practice offers many advantages to schools of nursing, including educational and research opportunities for faculty and students, as well as engagement within practice sites. Furthermore engaging in the community presents an opportunity for independent and collaborative practice and the utilisation of research opportunities for advanced practice nursing practitioners.
