Managing Digital Transformation Dilemma with Industrial Mapping

2021
Digital transformation is something that is seen to be a savior for many companies. However, it is not the only solution for all companies. This paper tries to answer the dilemma of implementing digital transformation by using a case study approach. Mapping the digital transformation process in 12 industrial sectors through semi-structured interviews with the board of directors of 20 companies is the major step in this research. The results of this interview were compared with a literature review that was published between 2019-2020. There were 14 journals out of 40 journals that were selected, at the second stage, from a total of 201 Scopus journals at the beginning of the process. In general, the results can be concluded that many companies are competing with digital transformation but do not have sufficient knowledge and readiness to do so. Consequently, the company must require a prolonged process to run well, or the results are not optimal due to incorrect application. This research also pointed out that there was a great deal of variety of digital transformation implementation even in the same Industry. Knowledge of the benefits and implications of analytical data on company operations and marketing, the readiness of the executive team - company leaders, and proper budget allocation according to the best fit technology are very critical. It determines the outcomes and size of the investment. Misallocation of budget or technology will have a significant impact on company costs. Using industrial mapping could provide insight and a clearer picture for leaders to determine the strategy and implementation of digital transformation and prepare for the next competition cycle.
