Antibiotic-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) spacers in hip surgery

Abstract: The implantation of antibiotic-loaded spacers is a standard procedure in the treatment of hip joint infections. This chapter reviews the current experience of antibiotic-impregnated hip spacers and focuses particularly on the pharmacokinetic and mechanical properties of these interim protheses as well as on the clinical outcome and possible related complications.
