Population: new strategies new scenario.

1998
This paper focuses on the population explosion in India. The population of India was estimated at 344 million in 1947 and 846 million in 1991 and has been increasing steadily since 1992. On October 15 1997 the IIPS Population Clock reported a total population of 933 million. This figure signifies that within a period of 50 years population has more than doubled. The growth rate of the population is 2.11% with a total fertility rate of 3.1 children per woman. It is noted that if this rate continues unabated India will surpass China to become the most populous country in the world. With these statistics achievements in science and technology by local scientists are nullified by the constant increase in population. Furthermore the paper demonstrates that population growth makes high demands in sectors like housing education and health care. It is suggested that to meet the challenges of increasing population the following is necessary: 1) production of basic goods and services 2) distributive justice and 3) population control.
