Magnetic properties of Mu/sub 2/S/sub 5/ sulfides (M = Ti, Zr, Hf)

1986
The magnetic properties were studied with a vibration magnetometer over the 4.2-300 k range at magnetic field strengths up to 8.10/sub 5/ A/m. The investigation showed that TiU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ is antiferromagnetic with temperature of 25 K, while ZrU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ and HFU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ are ferromagnetic with temperature equal to 65 and 180 K respectively. It is presumed that in ZrU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ and HFU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ domains with narrow boundaries are present. In weak fields and at low temperature these domains are stationary. The antiferromagnetism of TiU/sub 2/S/sub 5/ is evidently related to a substantial reorganization of band structure and a change in the density of states at the Fermi surface.
