Pecan is the fruit of the deciduous tree which belongs to the family Juglandaceae and genus Carya. Pecans, like other fruits of Juglandaceae family, are not true nuts but technically a drupe. It is considered as one of the high-energy food sources as lipids and carbohydrates typically constitute 93% of pecan kernel weight. Besides, the fruit is a good source of protein, iron, dietary fibre, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and thiamine. It is recommended for patients with high blood pressure due to its low sodium and high potassium formulation. In addition, it reduces blood lipids, atherosclerosis and blood sugar and help regulate body weight.
