A Study on Vehicle Wireless Communications with UWB in ITS System

2010
In this paper, the authors propose and analyze the vehicle wireless communications with Ultra wideband (UWB). In order to support various telematics services to drivers and passengers, the most important thing is the technique of transmitting and receiving high capacity multimedia data with real time in a fast moving vehicle. UWB technology is a promising candidate for short-range and high-throughput wireless communications, because of its several advantages. One of them is the potential for very high data rate at low power implementation. Another merit is the robustness to severe multipath conditions. And the other is the possibility for real time sub-decimeter positioning. By applying UWB to vehicle wireless communications, it is possible to offer data communications of high data rate and various telematics services. The authors analyze and derive the error probability of the UWB system with binary pulse position modulation-time hopping (PPM-TH). To verify the performance of the proposed system, its error performance is tested using various system parameters in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and indoor fading channel. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the simulation and numerical performance is similar. Also, the authors analyze the performance of the UWB system by applying AWGN and the indoor channel model with various parameters and its performance in multi-devices situation. The results of the paper can be applied to vehicle wireless communications and ITS systems.
