This chapter provides an overview of homelessness in the United States, including its history, causes, definitions, prevalence, and policies. Further, the chapter describes various populations that are most often impacted by homelessness, such as individuals diagnosed with mental illness, children and families, youth and young adults, people who identify as LGBTQ+, victims of domestic violence, veterans, and individuals with substance use issues.
