The effect of single-dose non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on urinary output

Objective: To compare the effect on urinary output of a single dose of three drugs (two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and a non-narcotic analgesic without known effects on the kidney) in an intensive care unit (ICU) selected population. Design: Prospective randomized study. Setting: A four bed surgical-medical ICU in a 960 bed teaching hospital. Subjects and interventions: Patients on the ICU for at least 24 h without arterial hypotension, abnormal renal function or coagulation, and who required an analgesic were randomly assigned to receive a single intravenous administration of ketorolac 30 mg (group KR), ketoprofen 100 mg (group KP), or propacetamol 2 g (group PP). The hourly urinary output was measured before drug administration and during the following 12 h. Arterial pressure, heart rate, central venous pressure and axillary temperature were measured before and after the analgesic administration.
