Cancer genetic counseling services (GCS) in a community-based cancer center (CBCC) in rural Nebraska: Effect of National Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP).

e16508 Background: Rapidly evolving genetic and genomic technologies have renovated our approach to cancer screening, prevention, and therapy, leading to individualized medicine era. Majority of cancer patients (pts) are diagnosed and treated in the community but few CBCCs have resources to provide GCS. NCCCP aims to create a CBCC network addressing the full cancer-care continuum. Identifying pts and delivering GCS in the community setting is one of the NCCCP goals. Methods: Between April 2009 and January 2011, genetic counselors (GCs), employed through NCCCP grant, collected medical/family history, provided psychosocial and cancer risk assessment, personal risk management, pre/post test counseling, and genetic testing for cancer patients/families at Saint Francis Cancer Treatment Center (SFCTC). Prior to NCCCP (July 2007-March 2009) GCS were provided by oncologists/nurse practitioners. 21-month GCS data before and after availability of NCCCP-provided GCs were gathered and compared.
