The case of Scott County: injection drug use and the HIV and hepatitis C virus outbreak

2021
Abstract The HIV outbreak in Scott County (Austin), Indiana, serves as case study of how HIV can rapidly enter and spread through a susceptible rural population. In this chapter, we discuss the specifics of the Scott County outbreak and the factors that contributed to the rapid spread of HIV there, as well as interventions that could be used to prevent or interrupt future outbreaks.
