Latest development of biopolymers based on polysaccharides

Abstract The biopolymer-based polysaccharides from varied sources are abundantly found in nature. The renewability, biodegradability, and cost-effective nature of these biopolymers have immense potential in pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries. In this chapter, we focus on the recent scientific advances in polysaccharides and polysaccharide-based materials and also use with other polymeric or inorganic materials to impart antimicrobial properties and mechanical efficiency and enhance the barrier potential to replace the synthetic polymers. Furthermore, the above derivatives of polysaccharides with improved structural, chemical, and functional properties have attracted researchers to design eco-friendly packaging biomaterials.
