Abstract Apoptosis is a pathologic feature of cardiomyocytes in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure. The temporal course of apoptosis in the peri-infarct area in the weeks following an AMI is still uncompletely defined. In order to study the time course of apoptosis after AMI, 16 rabbits underwent left coronary artery ligation and were sacrificed at 16, 26, 35, and 56 days after surgery.
