Objective: To characterize the sociodemographic profile of nursing students of a public higher education institution in the state of Piaui, Brazil, and to describe the use of information and communication technologies. Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study. The sample consisted of 236 undergraduate nursing students. For data collection an instrument with questions on sociodemographic data, the use of computer and Internet was used. Results: Of the 236 nursing students, 164 (69.5%) were female and 141 (60%) were aged between 17 and 21 years. The computer was used by 99 (41.9%) participants for school activities. Regarding the Internet, 149 (63.1%) used it to update information and knowledge. Conclusion: The use of information and communication technologies is increasingly frequent among nursing students and it is imperative that higher education institutions provide these resources and training on them for nursing scholars and faculty.
