useful way the potential effects of rage and anger, which are not dismissed reductively as the result of infantile motives and, given the traditional client-therapist milieu, abated and controlled for the wrong reasons. In the same vein, Lifton is also able to examine guilt, not in a static or self-lacerating form, but as the basis for self-scrutiny leading to growth and perhaps to new vision. By focusing in this way on the realities of the veteran's plight, and by stressing life-as-process rather than nailing people into static categories, Lifton is also able to suggest a possible basis for the analysis of personal and social change, a problem not easily resolved in traditional terms.
