Evaluation of noise excess for pushing propeller aircraft by CFD aeroacoustic calculation

2004
The paper is devoted to show the capabilities of a set of CFD numerical tools to evaluate the noise emitted by the push-propelled Piaggio P180 aircraft and to pursue its own acoustical optimization. The aim is achieved by coupling a RANSE code (aerodynamic solution around the whole aircraft and, in particular, computation of the inflow velocity impinging onto the propeller disk) to a BIEM solver (determination of the propeller airload distribution), and by using a typical acoustic-analogy approach to estimate the noise level in the far field. Based on the interesting features of the generating noise mechanisms revealed by such a numerical facility, many different strategies aiming at an effective noise reduction are examined.
