Orbital excitations in the 4d spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$

2015
We apply a combination of optical spectroscopy and Raman scattering to study the spin-orbit coupled electronic structure of the 4d Mott insulator {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$. Our measurements reveal a series of orbital excitations involving j$_{eff}$ states of the Ru atom, as well as optical transitions across the Mott gap. Analysis of these features allows us to estimate the spin-orbit coupling and establishes the existence of the j$_{eff}$=1/2 state in this material. The long lifetime and well-separated nature of these excitations provides a rare opportunity for the study of the relativistic Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice and our work establishes the importance of {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ for studies of the combination of strong correlations and spin-orbit coupling.
