Evaluation of Janani Suraksha Yojana among Antenatal and Postnatal Registered Women in Field Practice Area of GGSMC, Faridkot

Background: Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention initiated to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. For proper utilization of the care services advantages, it is necessary for the people to be aware of the scheme. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess awareness of JSY among antenatal care and postnatal care registered women and to find out the reasons for not availing the services. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in field practice area of the Department of Community Medicine Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot. After calculating the sample size, 283 women registered in the year 2013– 2014 were included into the study. The information was collected on pre-designed validated pro forma and data were analyzed using SPSS Version 20.0. Results: The proportions of deliveries of the first (55%) and second (32%) order were significantly higher among beneficiaries of JSY than the non-beneficiaries, i.e., 37% and 26%, respectively, ( P = 0.0000). The proportion of institutional delivery was significantly higher for beneficiaries. Conclusions: Better quality of health-care providers and better health education through community participation results in the better utilization of JSY.
