Numerical & Experimental Investigation on the Cooling Performance Affected by the Flow Rate of Coolant of the Inverter Integrated WFSM

The conventional commercial winding synchronous motor system has a disadvantage in terms of efficiency and vehicle applicability since it has a separate packaging structure for the motor with inverter in the perspective of the design for electric vehicles. Therefore, a single system packaging research has been regarded to technical trend to enable size optimization, and the high efficiency cooling structure has been recognized as an important design issue accordingly. In this study, effectiveness of coolant flow rate of single packaged WFSM-inverter unit with dual coolant passage has been investigated through the computational fluid dynamics and experimental verification. Then, adequate design range considering motor operation stability and energy efficiency has been suggested.
