Where Are the Knowledge Workers? The Case of Silicon Valley North in Ontario, Canada

The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the discourse on changing workplaces in the knowledge economy, by focusing specifically on the rise of mobile and multi-locational knowledge work (workplace mobility) Drawing from the experiences of 25 knowledge workers based in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo, Ontario in Canada (also known as Silicon Valley North), in this chapter we show that these new ways of working affect not only the use of different spaces for work, but also how workspaces—and office-based work—are being defined This will affect how workplaces are studied, understood, and planned for Finally, by exploring changes in work location that were underway prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, these findings also provide some insight into how workplaces are likely to look once the pandemic is resolved © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG
