Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for the Biodiversity Heritage Library

2014
The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) has been consistently assigning CrossRef DOIs to monographic publications for three years. The number of items in BHL with DOIs, however is very small (68,025 as of August 26, 2014). BHL now also has over 140,000 articles identified, primarily via BioSTOR. The current CrossRef pricing model does not scale for BHL. For this reason, BHL has looked at other DOI services (DataCite, etc.) as well as worked with CrossRef to determine if a scalable pricing model is possible. This poster will serve to raise questions and seek input from TDWG members on what a DOI should do in a BHL context.
