Conocimiento en nutrición, hábitos alimentarios y estado nutricional de adultos mayores en San Isidro del General, San José, Costa Rica 2019

2020
Objective: To relate the knowledge in nutrition, eating habits and nutritional status of adults over 60 to 95 years of age, in San Isidro de El General, during the 2019 period. Methodology: Cross-sectional, non-experimental, correlational study quantitative, with the participation of 99 older adults. Results: It was found that 17% of older adults finished university while 40% only attended elementary school. Most of them have three mealtimes: breakfast (22.7%), lunch (25%) and dinner (19.5%). Regarding knowledge in nutrition, they obtained an average score of 72 points. 85.9% of the elderly had a BMI greater than 23 kg/m2 and in terms of MNA results 87% of the elderly have a satisfactory nutritional status. Conclusions: The most predominant factor among the variables is the sociodemographic one because, due to the low educational level and the low economic income, although some older adults know basic nutrition issues, they do not have enough economic income to improve their eating habits. Others, at a low educational level, do not know about nutrition and this influence both their habits and their nutritional status.
