We report a case of purulent pericarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus in a malnourished 17-month-old child. The clinical features, diagnosis especially the usefulness of non-invasive ultrasound as well as immunological and molecular biology studies, management and outcome of this life threatening condition are discussed. © 2006 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
