Fuel control for spark ignition engine with a particulate filter system

There is provided a system for filtering and oxidizing particulate material which is produced by a gasoline engine with direct injection is disclosed. In one embodiment, the air / fuel of the engine cylinder is adapted to permit oxidation of soot on an upstream particulate filters, while exhaust gas is efficiently processed in a downstream catalyst.
