The Trials, Tribulations and Successes of Diabetes Messaging: From Agreed Dataset to Final Product

This paper describes the diabetes messaging project that is still being piloted, and the results to date. The aim of the project was to develop a system that allowed general practitioners to send diabetes data directly from their clinical desktop software to the Division of General Practice diabetes database. Standards were developed and/or agreed (desirable diabetes dataset, HL7 specifications, business rules, encryption), included in clinical desktop software and the Divisions diabetes databases, tested and then piloted in practices.
