Sex-specific arrhythmia risk of post-MI follow-up

2020
Abstract Improvement in interventional and medical treatment of myocardial infarction has significantly reduced mortality and morbidity after myocardial infarction in recent decades. However, coronary heart disease remains the most common cause of death in both men and women. There are differences between men and women suffering from an acute myocardial infarction. Women are older, have more comorbidities and their mortality rate is significantly higher than that of men, but this cannot be explained solely by their age and comorbidities. In contrast to excess mortality, women have a lower incidence of malignant ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The cause of death in women after myocardial infarction appears to be more often heart failure. Early recognition and treatment must be improved.
