Sexual deviancy : Assessment for court

2019
This case study presents the case of Jay, an adult male, who was being sentenced for several sexual offences. These offences involved Jay attempting to meet a person who he believed was a 12-year-old female for sex, although this turned out to be a vigilante group posing as a child. Jay’s offences also involved a sexual interest in the use of nappies/diapers. The risk assessment was requested by the Judge in order to help understand Jay so as to impose an appropriate sentence. Jay was assessed using clinical interviews, psychometric testing, static risk assessment, and structured professional judgment-based risk assessment. A clinical case formulation was carefully considered alongside protective factors and scenario planning. It was concluded that Jay’s sexual offending risk would be best managed in a prison where he could access specialist treatment designed to help men address sexual deviance. Other recommendations were made to aid his eventual resettlement into the community. The case study highlights the importance of a thorough assessment of the factors contributing to offending risk at the earliest possible point in a prisoner’s sentence so that the most appropriate treatment can be sourced to attempt to reduce the risk of reoffending.
