A Comparative Study on the Bacteriostatic Activity of Alcoholic and Water Extracts of the Fig Leaf

Objective To evaluate the bacteriostatic activity of alcoholic and water extracts of fig leaf.Method Bacteriostatic activities of the alcoholic and water extracts prepared from fig leaf were tested on Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by paper disc diffusion method.Results At the concentration of 100 mg/mL of the alcoholic extract,the zone of inhibition for all the three testing bacterial species was greater than 8 mm.In contrast,the zone of inhibition of the water extract(144 mg/mL) was smaller than 8 mm.Conclusion An obvious bacteriostatic effect was found in the alcoholic extract of the fig leaf.
