Method and device for edge trimming of a float glass ribbon (13) whose thickness is 0.4 to 24 mm changeable in which a specific low crack is generated for each thickness, the depth of actively influenced by the energy input by means of laser, controlled in response to the surface temperature of the float glass ribbon (13) and a subsequent cooling, the temporal effect is variable. To ensure a permanent process reliability of the separation plan and the thickness of the float glass ribbon (13) is detected to immediately put at termination of the separating crack a new Initalriss or a scoring means (10), the beam shaping optics (2) and the cooling nozzle (4) full cutting unit (11) always move at a constant height distance from the surface of the float glass strip (13). Method and apparatus are characterized in particular by the need of only a small laser power.
