Recurrent myocardial infarction from the perspective of the victim's family member: case report

2019
Introduction: This study reports possible factors for recurrence of acute myocardial infarction of a patient treated in a coronary care unit from a family perspective. Case Report: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, case report type. Data were collected through a semi-structured pilot interview with a relative of a patient who was admitted to the coronary care unit with recurrence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The family member reported that the intense physical activity performed by the patient, excessive alcohol consumption and non-adherence to drug treatment contributed to the second picture of AMI. The family member mentioned that the guidelines received during discharge were only about the prescribed drugs, highlighting the lack of guidance on lifestyle changes, especially to the nursing staff. Conclusion: The present report revealed that guidance during discharge is not effective in preventing recurrence of AMI and emphasizes the need to rethink the role of nursing professionals in relation to the guidance provided, as a way to facilitate patient adherence to drug treatment and to lifestyle changes.
