Wind Energy FACTS Applications and Stabilization Schemes

2018
Abstract The development of wind power industry is rapid. Large-scale wind farms are being connected to power systems. The integration of wind power and solar with high penetration has large impacts on the stability and reliability of power systems. Recent studies focus on the advanced solutions to prevent severe consequences for the power systems considered. As a result, wind farms are a sink for reactive power. The management of reactive power system is required to avoid low-voltage issues in the wind power system. Flexible AC Transmission Systems devices enhance the performance of the electric power, which include a group of shunt and series devices such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) that can support the required reactive power for stabilization voltage. STATCOM applications in wind farms have been studied and the results from previous studies indicate that it can support the reactive power required to the wind farm under various operating conditions, thereby improving the stability of the network.
