The beneficial effect of physical exercise (PE) on health has been widely demonstrated for over 20 years. Epidemiological studies show that regular PE reduces mortality (from any cause) and is beneficial in the prevention and improvement of numerous chronic conditions (cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, diabetes, obesity, etc.). With regard to gastrointestinal disorders, PE has a particularly convincing proven preventive effect on colon cancer. However, when the intensity and the duration of exertion increases, detrimental effects, particularly of a gastrointestinal nature, may be seen.
