An immigrant judge's ode to naturalization ceremonies

Nothing quite compares to the joy and excitement that naturalization ceremony days bring to our beautiful but monastic federal courthouse. Will their daughter be a judge, a teacher, or perhaps a life-saving epidemiologist? I miss the cheers when I tell them that I had the privilege of administering the oath of citizenship to my 92-year-old adoptive mother, who raised me in Haiti before I joined my parents in the States. NANCY JOSEPH is a magistrate judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and a 2016 graduate of Duke's Master of Judicial Studies program.
