Significado de la Educación en valores para estudiantes de medicina y enfermería de la Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCLA), Venezuela

The Health Sciences Faculty at the Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCLA), in Venezuela, developed a values and bioethics education program for undergraduate medical and nursery students, which has oriented its efforts to incorporate those matters in a transversal curriculum axis of subjects, as well as training professor’s staff to carry out that education. To identify the student’s perspective on that process has been of a great value to contribute to reflect about the values education in the Health Sciences Faculty. That was the purpose of this research, in which we pursue to understand the meaning of the values education program for a group of medical and nursery undergraduate programs, at the seventh semester level. We seek to contribute to optimize and give support to the program. To do so, we did a qualitative research, gathering information from two groups of 10 students each, using an intentional sampling of representative students of their natural groups, with the presence of both male and female genders, and using the Group Discussion technic. An interpretative form of data analyses was used, from which it was developed a categories scheme that emerged from the participants discourses. The students considered necessary and positive the values education program developed by de Health Scholl. If the Program is permanently strengthened and improved, taking in consideration the results and conclusions of the Discussion Groups, it could certainly impact in the attitudes and behavior modifications, to be able to prepare the students for their future professional activity.
