The purpose of the Bachelor’s Thesis was to describe what a document management system is and why it is necessary in business. The Bachelor’s Thesis is aimed for people and organizations that have a future need to invest in a document management system. Research questions of the thesis also help to understand, how a document management system can improve the information security of the organization, and how to build a test-environment. The document management systems are often slightly foreign concepts to the small organizations because of the small amount of the documents needed to manage. Nowadays there are systems that can be first tested to reevaluate the necessity to invest in one. When the organization grows, it is important to be able to manage the documents in easily utilizable. The theoretical part of the Bachelor’s Thesis is based on the literature and Internet articles. The empirical part consists of the practices and systems observed in the case organization. In the first part of the Bachelor’s Thesis the basic terms related to the document management system are described. The case organization and its systems and challenges have been introduced in the second part. A solution to solve those challenges can be achieved with the advantages of the document management system. There is also a practical example of how to install one document management system as an answer to the third research question.
