Continuing to deliver: the evidence base for pre-implantation genetic screening

We respond to the comments made in the BBC commissioned article by Heneghan and colleagues and the Panorama programme by Deborah Cohen about pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS), which was among the three “add on” treatments highlighted in the programme and the 41 listed in the article.12 Currently an extensive evidence base supports the efficacy of PGS: more than 20 retrospective studies and four randomised controlled trials suggest that, if performed to a high standard, PGS can, and does, improve IVF success for some patient groups.34567 We accept, however, that all studies are open to criticism and thus support further investigations, randomised and retrospective.
