Abstract Recent changes in the planning program at MIT are described against a background of trends in the society and the profession that invalidate many of the assumptions underlying traditional planning education. MIT's more flexible approach is seen as a generally useful response to a more complex educational environment, especially the improved preparation of entering students, the greater diversity of values, the rapid expansion of knowledge about cities, and the increasing variety of professional roles.
