Migración y remesas: nexos América Latina-Europa

2011
The paper examines the migration-remittances-development links in the academic and policy literature on the Latin American migration to the United States, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. It aims at illustrating the relationships between the determinants of migration, migrants characteristics, the prevailing condition in host countries and the patterns of remittances. The article analyzes the sex and skill composition of Ecuadorian and Dominican migrants, the tendencies in migrant flows and employment in the host countries, linking the volume of remittances with the quality of migrants employment. It concludes that the results on remittances impacts on poverty, on the emergence of new economic activities and on the living conditions of migrant households are far from homogeneous. Finally, it challenges the continuity of remittances, given the instability of the labour markets in host countries, and the emergence of restrictive migratory policies.
