Challenges in wireless networking for real-time vital sensing from persons in exercises

2016
Real-time vital sensing/monitoring for persons during exercises is essential for not only avoiding injuries and diseases but also effective training. For the vital sensing, we have developed a heart rate sensing technique canceling motion artifact induced during exercise and an energy expenditure sensing technique using tri-axial accelerometer. On the other hand, for the wireless transmission, mainly assuming several tens of persons during exercises, we have developed a broadcast/unicast-based networking technique placing data forwarding nodes around an athletic field. In this paper, paying attention to the wireless networking, we show the challenges we have so far made to select the broadcast/unicast-based technique. Furthermore, we discuss the necessity of real-time vital sensing/monitoring from one thousand persons during exercises and present future challenges in wireless networking towards its realization.
