Geometrical analysis and seismic modelling of an outer foredeep margin in the lower Messinian Laga turbidite complex (Central Apennines, Abruzzo, Italy)

2006
Stratigraphical analyses of an outcropping turbidite sequence allow the definition of the lateral transition between the outer fore-deep margin and the peripheral bulge in relation to the internal cyclicity of the turbidite complex. These results were used for the generation of exploration play concepts, comparing seismic-scale stereophotographic surveys, synthetic seismic sections and subsurface data (well data and seismic profiles). The Laga foredeep fill, bounded by two regional unconformities generated by basin-modification phases, is a major allostratigraphic unit comprising two allogroups (EM, mainly early Messinian and LM, mainly late Messinian). They are arranged in a major thinning-and-fining upward succession, related to an overall retrogradational architecture. The EM unit comprises a turbidite complex, over 1500 m thick, consisting of tabular and laterally continuous turbidite lobe, lobe fringe and basin plain deposits with longitudinal dispersion, mainly from N to S, thinning and onlapping abruptly toward the foreland ramp. At least six turbidite systems (TS 1-6) referred to as 4th order sequences were identified. Two-dimensional seismic modelling was undertaken on a section crossing the outer margin of the EM basin. Comparison of seismic modelling output with seismic data from buried foredeep basins shows that subtle play concepts may be defined and characterised through this kind of integration.
