INTUSSUSCEPTION DUE TO AN INFLAMMATORY FIBROID POLYP IN THE ILEUM -AN ADULT CASE-

1996
An intussusception due to an inflammatory fibroid polyp in the ileum is extremely rare and only 43 cases have been reported in Japan. Here we report an adult case, toghther with a review of the literature. A 70-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of a lower abdominal pain and abdominal fullness. There was a previous history of undergoing an open surgery recently. Abdorminal X-ray examination revealed postoperative adhesion of the ileus. After decompression by a long tube, a contrast medium study and CT scanning confirmed an obstructed ileus. Under a diagnosis of intussusception, emergency laporotomy was performed. At surgery, the intususception was found to be 8 cm in diameter and 20 cm long in the tail of the ileus. A histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed that the intussusception was due to a 2.8×2.8×2.5 cm inflammatory fibroid polyp (I.F.P.). It is important to concider IFP as a probable underlying disease in case of adult intussusception.
