Hands-on Training in General Practice - Integration of University and Extramural Teaching

2007
INTRODUCTION: In order to meet more adequately the demands on the discipline of general practice as major subject in the undergraduate curriculum, the two-weeks hands-on training (conducted by the teaching unit of general practice of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg since winter semester 2002/03) is now offered as a three-week course from summer semester onwards. METHOD: A special aspect of the teaching concept is the interlocking of university teaching and practical education taking place locally at general practitioners’ surgeries to create an expedient and consistent unit. RESULTS: The results of summative and formative evaluations within the teaching unit ranged from good to excellent, reflecting both the ratings by students and tutors. Within the internal evaluation of all medical departments general practice scores among the top ranks. CONCLUSION: The concept of integrated teaching of theoretical and practical knowledge stands out by a high degree of acceptance with students and faculty alike.
