Putting Broughton islands on the map, 1770-1851
2012
As an editor's indulgence I have included this short piece by Robert King on Broughton Island for two reasons. First, since I gaze at Broughton Island daily from my home in Port Stephens I have a personal interest in it, especially as I have claimed in another booklet that both the island and Providence Bay were named by the good captain himself. Second, having been made aware of Broughton's contributions to Australian cartography from my (defective) research, his name seems to have cropped up everywhere. Readers might imagine my surprise and delight when, on a recent tour of the US Pacific Northwest, I stopped randomly at one of the historical markers along the length of the mighty Colombia River and found the interpretive display pictured at the end of the article. Robert's article is a slightly edited version of a report he published in Map Matters Issue 14 June 2011, and I appreciate the permission of the Australian Hydrographical Society to republish it here.
