Observation of the decays tau. -->. eta X, tau. -->. omega. X

In a study of tau lepton decay using the High Resolution Spectrometer at the PEP storage ring, the inclusive production of the rho, ..omega.., and eta mesons has been observed. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 300 pb/sup -1/ and the storage ring was operated at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV. The inclusive branching ratio for tau/sup +/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/eta X is (8 +- 4)%. This result resolves the current discrepancy between the one-prong topological branching ratio and the sum of the individual one-prong modes.
