Control of zebra mussels

1994
PURPOSE: To control injurious mussels belonging to the family Dreissenidae living in water by applying peracetic acid capable of being relatively easily and safely handled and available at a reasonable cost to the freshwater mussels or a place in which the mussels live. CONSTITUTION: This method for controlling freshwater mussels belonging to the family Dreissenidae comprises bringing peracetic acid in an amount effective for controlling the organisms into contact with the mussels directly or an environment in which the control of the mussels is desired. When the mussels in an aqueous environment are controlled, the peracetic acid is preferably used in an amount of at least 0.1 ppm especially as an at least 1 wt.% aqueous solution. The peracetic acid is preferably further mixed with a stabilizer (especially preferably 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid). The aqueous environment includes the water intakes, pipes and storage systems of powder stations or water-treating factories, and the treating water flows and systems of factories. The mussels are especially zebra mussels or quagga mussels. COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
